Knossos Palace -Wine Tour

A visit at the Minoan Palace at Knossos, symbol of the Minoan civilization, which is widely acknowledged as one of the founding cornerstones of European civilisation, is an absolute must. The site was discovered in 1878 by Minos Kalokairinos. The excavations in Knossos began in AD 1900 by the English archaeologist Sir Arthur Evans (1851–1941) and his team, and they continued for 35 years. The palace was excavated and partially restored under the direction of Arthur Evans in the earliest years of the 20th century. Its size far exceeded his original expectations, as did the discovery of two ancient scripts, which he termed Linear A and Linear B, to distinguish their writing from the pictographs also present. From the layering of the palace Evans developed de novo an archaeological concept of the civilization that used it, which he called Minoan, following the pre-existing custom of labelling all objects from the location Minoan. The age-old practice of viniculture is still an integral part of Cretan life: we cordially invite you to continue your journey through fertile vineyards to the local winery. Think of a spectacular multimedia show where Cretan history comes to life; A stately wine cellar with superb wines maturing in oak barrels; A guest hall where wines are enjoyed next to delicious plates of the local, yet renowned Mediterranean cuisine. And then, imagine all these inside a magnificent estate vineyard. This is the Boutari Winery in Crete, worthy of the island’s history and a landmark for the vinicultural future of Greece. The Fantaxometoho Estate lies just outside the village of Skalani, on the road towards the village of Myrtia, birthplace of the famous Cretan author Nikos Kazantzakis. It is situated within the Arhanes vine-growing region, a district producing “Appellation d’ origine de Qualité Supérieure” wines.

Myths and legends come alive through the narration of our official guide. Our program continues driving up to the Dikti Mountain and de fertile plateau of Lassithi. During our visit at Lassithi Mountains , we have the chance to visit a local representative Cretan Pottery. Pottery is one of the oldest arts developed in Crete from 3000 BC first Minoan times and is associated with the creation of products based on the four elements of the nature: earth, water, air and fire. Before we go back to our hotel , we stop at a local Olive Oil Factory to taste the famous Cretan Virgin Olive oil .Olive oil is a staple part of the Cretan or Mediterranean diet.Long before the rest of the world discovered its healthy benefits, the long-living Cretans were among olive oil’s heaviest consumers.Olive oil is used for dressing salads and daily cooking needs. It is also consumed on its own, on warm toasted bread sprinkled with fresh oregano.

Rethymno Old Town city tour-Cretan Soap workshop

Today we visit the picturesque Venetian City of Rethymno.Rethymno was originally built during the Minoan civilization (ancient Rhithymna and Arsinoe). The city was prominent enough to mint its own coins and maintain urban growth. One of these coins is today depicted as the crest of the town: two dolphins in a circle. This region as a whole is rich with ancient history, most notably through the Minoan civilisation centred at Kydonia east of Rethymno. Rethymno itself began a period of growth when the Venetian conquerors of the island decided to put an intermediate commercial station between Heraklion and Chania, acquiring its own bishop and nobility in the process. Today’s old town (palia poli) is almost entirely built by the Republic of Venice. It is one of the best-preserved old towns in Crete. From circa 1250 the city was the see of the Latin Diocese of Retimo, which was renamed Retimo–Ario after the absorption in 1551 of the Diocese of Ario and as suppressed only after the Turkish conquest. The town still maintains its old aristocraticappearance, with its buildings dating from the 16th century, arched doorways, stone staircases, Byzantine and Hellenic-Roman remains, the small Venetian harbour and narrow streets. The Venetian Loggia houses the information office of the Ministry of Culture and Sports. Crete has many olive oil mills, many wineries , breweries and bee -keepers, but only one visitable Cosmetics factory. Per use the selection of handcrafted, natural skin products at Fisika, a family business founded by three Cretan women. Sniff the vegetarian skin creams and gentle vegan soaps, made from scratch and never animal-tested. Experience the secret of Greek beauty on your free tour through the workshop and test products on site.

Activity ‘’ Kneading bread’’

It was at the beginning of the 80’s, that an intelligent, creative, diligent dreamer decided to launch a work of a lifetime. His intention was to offer something to Crete, his motherland.Although he had nothing to do with hoteliers or entrepreneurs, he decided to establish a place where all memories of his childhood could revive and continue to stay alive.Like an itinerant junkman, Mr. Saloustros went from house to house and from village to village to gather items that were dumped, or just “unwanted”.Those included stones from demolished houses, mountain rocks etc. and were handpicked to ornate the buildings of the complex.Upon arrival in the village , all of the guests can admire the small houses in the complex and the Folklore museum .After this short visit guests will participate in a bread-kneading activity..
